The City of Austin requires plumbing contractors to hold a valid Texas State Master Plumber license AND register with the City of Austin Development Services Department. A Responsible Master Plumber must be designated for each contracting business. Austin also requires a separate city-issued contractor registration before pulling permits.
Austin Business License (General Business Registration)
All businesses operating in Austin must register with the City of Austin. This is separate from the contractor license. Register online through the Austin Finance Online portal.
Texas State Requirements

Required to operate as a plumbing contractor in Texas. Issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE). Applicants must pass the Master Plumber examination, have at least 4 years of plumbing experience (including 1 year as a Journeyman Plumber), and provide proof of insurance. The license must be renewed annually.
Texas Plumbing Inspector Surety Bond
Texas plumbing contractors are required to maintain a $25,000 surety bond filed with TSBPE. The bond protects consumers against incomplete or faulty work.
Texas Business Entity Registration (if applicable)
If operating as an LLC or corporation, register with the Texas Secretary of State. Sole proprietors doing business under their legal name are not required to register.
